A loft bed is a type of bunk bed which replaces the lower bunk with other furniture or empty space. This is an efficient way to utilize space as it allows use of vertical space which remains otherwise unused. The extra space under the bed can be used to place tables, drawers, cabinet, chairs or sofa set etc. In case of kids loft bed, the extra space is often used for a tent, playhouse or other playful stuffs. Some kids lofts also provide extra features like a slide to get down from the bed.

Things to check for

When you are shopping for a kids loft bed there are a few extra things to keep in mind.

First and foremost of all is safety. Your kid can have all the fun he wants but you don’t want him to get hurt, do you? If your kid is less than six it is probably not a good idea to buy a loft bed yet. Check for strong guard rails even if your kid is more than six. Anyone, even an adult can drop out of the bed just as easily. Make sure the ladder or stairs are safe and appropriate for your child. If the bed comes with a slide don’t forget to check that one too. If the kid’s room has a low ceiling or a fan, search for a low loft bed. Of course, when it comes to kiddy fun, it can get dangerous for no apparent reason but make sure the bed doesn’t invite any trouble.

Material is another big issue. Metal beds are cheaper but wooden beds for kids are more customizable and can be decorated easily. Let’s face it your child is not going to use the bed for more than 5-6 years. So unless you are a dotty grandparent who can think of only the best for his grandchild, it is better you go for cheap woods. Beware of unsafe finishing material. Finishing materials or colors made from natural extracts do not usually have any bad effects, especially if your kid accidentally gets some in to his stomach.

If you prefer a loft bed with a reading table or cabinet be sure that they are of appropriate size. Keep in mind the growth of your child over the next few years otherwise you may find yourself throwing away undersized furniture of your kid only after a year or two.

Conclusion

Every parent wants their kid to grow up in a nice and safe environment. So, don’t forget to check and double check the safety factors before you buy your kid a fun bed for his bedroom.
